The link below will take you to a 30 minute video on the effects of immersion in cold water. It is called Cold Water Boot Camp. Cold water is defined as anything under 68 degrees. The video outlines a 1 – 10 – 1 sequence leading to incapacitation and unconsciousness; 1 minute - recovery from cold shock on entering the water, 10 minutes - time till cold incapacitates you, 1 hour – time till you become unconscious from hypothermia. The video goes on to demonstrate ways to help you survive longer in cold water.
This is an excellent video and well worth your time, even for those of us who paddle in warmer climates. Click on the link below and spend 30 minutes. It might save your life.

Bruce, dressed for cold water in a drysuit. Like all safety conscious paddlers, he always wears his PFD and spray deck, whether it is warm or cold.
