I’m standing on my deck, feeling a strong southwest wind blow across the pond and rustle the trees around me. The GHRP paddlers are headed for Manhattan this morning on the final lap of their 145-mile paddle from Albany to Pier 96 in New York City. If they are experiencing this wind, it will be in their faces and against the rising tide; a sure recipe for steep breaking waves in New York Harbor. I will be interested to hear about this final day of paddling. Perhaps some of you who were there could add a comment below or send me an email that I could publish.
When I left the through paddlers at Irvington on Friday afternoon, I promised I’d have pictures and video up on the website soon after they got home. This is my attempt to fulfill that promise. I know there are folks who I somehow managed to not include in these photos, most notably, Scott Keller, our leader on this adventure. My picture taking was spontaneous, not planned. Any omissions are purely accidental.
It was great paddling with these folks. Many of the paddlers have become good friends over the three years that I have participated in this event. The presence of the young adults who rowed and sailed the Whitehall Gigs along with us was a huge bonus (see Building Bridges/Building Boats). They were to a person courteous and fun to be around, helping some of us older folks to forget about the aches and pains of age for a while.
This video is just under six minutes in length. It features some of the sights, sounds and people of this year’s Great Hudson River Paddle.
