Each year since 2004, Terri Barr of Hudson Valley Outfitters in Cold Spring has recruited a group of paddlers to engage the GHRP paddlers in a massive water gun fight as they pass by. Interestingly, these folks even pay her for the privilege of being set upon the the GHRP’ers and so far, being defeated each year. This year was no different, though the challengers put up a valiant fight. It looked like the battle would be a draw for the first time. Then our officers took matters into their own hands by stealing Terri’s paddle, leaving her dead in the water. Next they stole both of her water cannons. Finally, Admiral Dan hooked on to her boat with a tow line and dragged her from the field of battle, where she surrendered!
The Battle is one of the things that all GHRP paddlers look forward to. It is great fun with little chance of anyone getting hurt. We generally gather at Bannerman Island and plan our strategy. Some of the diehards apply war paint, while others test their water cannons to be sure that they work properly. Then we send out scouts to see where the attackers will come from this year. Soon everyone is soaked and having a great time. While all ages are involved, for some of us older folks, the battle offers a chance to play like a kid again.
We end by having lunch together on the beach. One enterprising young man set up a stand and sold lemonade to make money for his college fund! Below is some video of this year’s action.
